Goodreads Synopsis

Graceling meets Beauty and the Beast in this sweeping fantasy about one girl’s journey to fulfill her destiny and the monster who gets in her way-by stealing her heart.

Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.

Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.

With no choice but to fulfill her duty, Nyx resents her family for never trying to save her and hates herself for wanting to escape her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she’s ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.

But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle—a shifting maze of magical rooms—enthralls her.

As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex’s secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.

My Thoughts

Before I get started with my thoughts I want to say thank you to Megan @ BookslayerReads for buddy reading this book with me. I had so much fun being able to read through a few chapters and talking to you about what we thought was going to happen. Would should definitely do another buddy read together in the near future. If you aren’t already following Megan what are you waiting for? GO NOW and follow her. She is such an amazing sweet person.

˜ The first few chapters was an info dump for me and I had to force myself to get through them. Once getting through those initial chapters though I  understand that information was needed I just wish the author would have went about it in a different way.

˜  I was able to guess part of the twist pretty early on. While that didn’t affect my attention to the book at all I still wish it would have taken me a little longer to figure it out.

˜ I could have done without all of the talk about the Gods ad Hermectic Arts. Every time those cam up I found myself trying to get through those parts a fast as possible because honestly I was having a hard time keeping up an understanding what was going on.

˜ Retelling: I love how this is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. If you don’t know Beauty and the Beast is my all time favorite Disney movie. While the concept of this book is completely different to Beauty and the Beast you still get some of the main similarities.

˜ Ignifex: I couldn’t help but love Ignifex even though he is the bad boy you aren’t meant to love.

˜ Nyx: She is the main character in this book and its told from her perspective so go through what she goes through. While she goes through so many emotions which makes it hard to figure out what her true feelings are I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. I loved her character and I could completely understand where she was coming from.

˜ The Writing: I think the writing was amazing. The author did an amazing job at painting a picture for you. It wasn’t so detailed that it would get on your nerves. It was detailed just enough for me to be able to visualize the world in my head.

Please bare with me I am trying different review formats trying to find something that works better for me. Please do let me know if like/hate this setup and what I could do to make it better? Have you read Cruel Beauty? What did you think of it?

  1. I totally love Beauty and the Beast too and I think the story retelling was good; and yes you were right there was too much info which made me skip a lot.
My favourite character was Ignifex. Soooo, I totally agree with you.
