The Sun Is Also A Star By Nicola Yoon

The Sun Is Also A Star

Title: The Sun Is Also a Star

Author: Nicola Yoon

Format: Paperback ARC

Pages: 348 pages

Source: Own/Giveaway win

My Rating: 3.5 stars

Synopsis

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

My Thoughts

First I want to mention that my review is based off of an ARC that I won in a giveaway back in 2017 from someone who no longer wanted it. I say that because I am not sure how the final book is formatted or if a lot was changed etc. so what I have to say might not even be relevant so just keep that in mind.

When I first picked this up I read 50 pages and I wasn’t really into it at all. It’s told mostly from Daniel and Natashas POV switching back and forth between the two but we also get chapters from other characters that didn’t seem to go with the story and there’s also chapters that are like history lessons and science lessons and at first those chapters would pull me out of the story. When I sat down to read it the next time I was completely drawn in. Basically because of the romance but once I finished the book I could see how everything made sense together.

The romance is very insta-lovey so if that’s not your thing I would skip this. And while it’s pretty unrealistic I found it to be really cute and heartbreaking at times. While the romance is the main focus of this book it also tackles so much more. It had diversity it talked about immigration, racism, and difficult family life. I really enjoyed this book but I was left feeling meh about it. It didn’t blow me away. I wasn’t swooning over the romance even though I thought it was cute and the ending felt rushed to me but I do still recommend that everyone reads this book.
