When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something frightening enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that had killed most of America’s children, but she and the others emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they could not control.
Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones. When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. She is on the run, desperate to find the only safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who have escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents. When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at having a life worth living.
Ugh why did I wait so long to read this book? I have had it on my bookshelf for the longest time and for some reason I kept putting off reading it and now I am kicking myself for waiting so long. I buddy read this book with Lili during the Day-A-Thon an you can read her review here.
I loved the characters in this book. Some more than others obviously. Ruby I think showed the most character growth out of all of the characters. When we are first introduced to her character she is such a coward who is to afraid to have a friends back who is actually standing up for her in the first place. By the end she is more sure of herself and isn’t afraid to stand up for/protect the people she cares about. Her character did get on my nerves a little because I just didn’t understand why she felt like she was so much worse than the other kids with abilities which made her keep secrets from them. She did eventually grow on me however she did something at the end that I knew was about to happen but that doesn’t mean I was happy with it.
There was a case of insta love in this book which didn’t work for me. Well the romance I thought was cute it was the build up to it that didn’t work for me because there basically was no build up to it. Also there was kind of sort of a love triangle but not really. If you’ve read it you will understand. I didn’t care for this at all and it made me so mad when I saw that build up happening.
There is just so much I loved about this book. The characters Liam, chubs, and sweet little Zu, To the writing and the plot line. I definitely want to continue on with this series.
