It’s that time of year again. Time for the Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag. This has become a yearly tradition for me as well as pretty much everybody else in the bookish community. I started blogging in July of 2016 so I didn’t do this tag then but I started doing it in 2017 and have done it every year since. If you want to see my previous posts you can do so by clicking the following links. 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.
This time last year I was exactly halfway through my challenge and this year I am over halfway through my challenge which I am really excited about. I have read 74/100 books so far this year which puts me 25 books ahead of schedule. Honestly I will probably reach my goal in the next 2-3 months which I am happy about since last year I didn’t manage to reach my 100 book goal.
1. BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2021?
I’ve read a lot of great books this year so it’s hard to just pick one but I think the one that stands out amongst all of the rest was The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This book was so poignant and one I believe everyone should read.
2. BEST SEQUEL OF 2021 SO FAR?
I haven’t read to many sequels this year but out of the ones I have read A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas was the best by far. I put off reading this because I was skeptical about all of the Rhysand love but I shouldn’t have been because I ended up loving him in this one as well.
3. NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET, BUT WANT TO?
There are actually so many new releases that I want to read but one that I already own but haven’t gotten around to reading yet is Lore by Alexandra Bracken.
4. MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE OF THE SECOND HALF OF 2021?
I actually have 2 books I am anticipating for the last half of the year and they are Kingdom of the Cursed by Kerri Maniscalco and The Wish by Nicholas Sparks. I will read anything these authors write and I have already preordered these books.
5. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT?
I did DNF a book this year but I didn’t get very far into it before realizing it just wasn’t for me. The book that I ended up reading all the way through and was so mad once I finished it was The Dark Tower by Stephen King. I did read this entire series and some of the books I really enjoyed but after reading it in it’s entirety and seeing how it concluded I don’t think it was worth my time.
6. BIGGEST SURPRISE?
Well Stephen King has been my biggest disappointment and my biggest surprise this year. There is one other book I can put here as well but I am going to save it for the next question. Anyways Lisey’s Story by Stephen King surprised me. I always go into his books with little to no expectations and this one blew me away. I would go so far as to say it’s probably my favorite King book that I have read to date.
7. FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR (DEBUT OR NEW TO YOU)?
This is the book that could have worked for biggest surprise as well. I have only read this book by this author so I can’t really call him a favorite yet but I absolutely loved it. I plan to continue on with this trilogy next month.
8. NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH?
Ok lets be honest I pretty much fall in love with every hero I read about but the one that stands out for me is Rhysand which surprises me because I was sure I was going to be the one person who continued to hate him after book one even though EVERYONE told me I was going to love him. Next time I will listen to y’all. Maybe!!
9. NEWEST FAVORITE CHARACTER(S)?
I have read some amazing characters this year but I am going to have to go with Fitz from The Chase by Elle Kennedy. He is the perfect mix of sexy jock and nerd and I just loved him.
10. BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY?
Looking at the cover of this book you would think it was a romcom which it is but it also deals with the death of a loved one which shocked me and I felt like the way the author portrayed different characters emotions was spot on. I haven’t full on cried while reading a book but this one had me teary eyed.
11. BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY?
Ok I know this book has some fighting and death etc. but it’s a book about books and I loved how the books were actual living things.
12. MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU BOUGHT/RECEIVED THIS YEAR?
I decided to just pick from the physical books I’ve gotten and then I narrowed it down to 3. Between those 3 I think House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland has my favorite cover. The other 2 were Lore by Alexandra Bracken and Safekeeping by Eva MacKenzie.
13. WHAT BOOKS DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR?
Oh gosh there are so many books I would like to get to sooner rather than later but I am only going to share one and that is A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer. I’m only sharing this one because I made such a big deal about needing the special edition cover from Fairyloot back in 2019. It has been 2 years and I still haven’t read it and it’s about time I fix that.
I always love doing this tag every year. It’s so much fun to look back on my reading for the first half of the year. I’m not going to tag anyone because most people do this tag annually anyways so just take this as your reminder that it’s time to do them. Have you read any of the books I mentioned? What has been your favorite book of the year so far? Keep an eye out for more check in posts coming soon.
