Mini Reviews: Every Heart A Doorway, Only Human, My Dark Vanessa, The Girl From The Sea & Dracula

Hello bookworms!!

I am still trying to play catch up on my reviews. Honestly, at this point I don’t really know how many reviews I have to catch up on and I’m kind of scared to look. I’m hoping I can get all of them written before the end of the year. To help me catch up I am doing these mini review posts sharing my thoughts on 5 books at a time and these reviews are usually pretty short because for the most part it has been so long since I read them, I can’t remember everything about them or what I wanted to say about them.  Anyways enough of me blabbing let’s get to the reviews.

Every Heart A Doorway

This is a kind of weird book I can get behind. Normally if a book is too weird, I struggle to understand what is going on but that wasn’t the case with this book. I followed along with the story easily. I loved all of the different characters some more than others of course. It was atmospheric and slightly disturbing, but I really enjoyed it and want to continue on with the series.

My Rating: 4 stars

Only Human

I don’t have much else to add about this trilogy. I buddy read it with Destiny, and I did enjoy it. There were instances where the science went completely over my head and there were times when the relationships took over the story but there was also a lot of action. I do feel like the ending of this one was rushed, and the conclusion seemed so simple after everything they went through to get to that point. Overall, I am glad I read this trilogy.

My Rating: 4 stars

My Dark Vanessa

This is another book I buddy read with Destiny. This is a hard book to read because of the subject matter. It’s told from alternating timelines. The past when Vanessa is 15 and the present when she is 32 and dealing with the repercussions of the past. I feel like you are meant to like Vanessa and feel sorry for her for what she has gone through and while I definitely feel sorry for her, I didn’t particularly like her. There were so many times where I wanted to throw my book across the room because it was making me so angry. Strane was very good at what he did but to me it also seemed so obvious what he was doing. I obviously can’t say how I would react in a similar situation because I have never had this happen to me. There are a lot of trigger warnings for this book so be aware of them before going into it.

My Rating: 4 stars

The Girl from the Sea

I’ve been reading a lot of graphic novels this year and when I came across this one on Libby, I placed a hold on it. Obviously being a graphic novel, it is a quick and easy read which I love. I loved the graphics in this, and I thought the relationship was cute and kind of sad as well. I didn’t really fully care for any of the characters. I didn’t hate them I just didn’t get attached to them like I usually do when reading. I feel like I needed more to be fully immersed in the story and characters.

My Rating: 3 stars

I buddy read this with Erin. I had high hopes for this book. Everybody is always talking about it and how much they love it, and I thought I would love it too because I love books with vampires, but I hated this book. This is probably my most disappointing read of the year. For a book called Dracula there is barely any Dracula. It was so slow and there was barely any action involved plus the ending felt rushed and way to easy. I’m glad I can finally say I have read Dracula but sad to say I hated it.

My Rating: 2 stars

There’re 5 more book reviews for you. Sorry to be posting book review posts back-to-back but I am determined to get caught up on my reviews by the end of the year. I only have 6 reviews left and 4 of them are for a series I have already reviewed but I have reread them and want to update my thoughts on them. What is your most disappointing book of the year so far?

  1. Good for you Misty, there is just enough in these reviews to give us an idea of what you think. I read Dracula back in school and I remember not liking it very much. I have wanted to read My Dark Vanessa, but just can’t seem to pick it up. Not sure if it is for me.

  2. Oh no, what a bummer to see that about Dracula. I’m surprised I’ve never seen anyone mention how little Dracula’s in the book, so maybe I won’t rush to pick up this “classic” anytime soon. 😂 I want to read My Dark Vanessa but I feel like I really need to emotionally prep myself for it! Great mini reviews 🙂

    1. Thank you!! I’ve literally never seen/heard anything negative about Dracula until after I posted this review and now several people have told me they felt the same way. Yes you need to be emotionally ready for My Dark Vanessa especially if you’re easily triggered. Thank you so much!!
