Synopsis

Mariel Spark knows not to trust a demon, especially one that wants her soul, but what’s a witch to do when he won’t leave her side—and she kind of doesn’t want him to?

Mariel Spark is prophesied to be the most powerful witch seen in centuries of the famed Spark family, but to the displeasure of her mother, she prefers baking to brewing potions and gardening to casting hexes. When a spell to summon flour goes very wrong, Mariel finds herself staring down a demon—one she inadvertently summoned for a soul bargain.

Ozroth the Ruthless is a legend among demons. Powerful and merciless, he drives hard bargains to collect mortal souls. But his reputation has suffered ever since a bargain went awry—if he can strike a bargain with Mariel, he will earn back his deadly reputation. Ozroth can’t leave Mariel’s side until they complete a bargain, which she refuses to do (turns out some humans are attached to their souls).

But the witch is funny. And curvy. And disgustingly yet endearingly cheerful. Becoming awkward roommates quickly escalates when Mariel, terrified to confess the inadvertent summoning to her mother, blurts out that she’s dating Ozroth. As Ozroth and Mariel struggle with their opposing goals and maintaining a fake relationship, real attraction blooms between them. But Ozroth has a limited amount of time to strike the deal, and if Mariel gives up her soul, she’ll lose all her emotions—including love—which will only spell disaster for them both.

My Review

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Ok so I wasn’t planning on reading this book this month but when it all of a sudden became available on Libby I had no choice unless I wanted to keep returning it and waiting for it over and over again until I was ready. I am so glad I decided to go ahead and read it because I really enjoyed it.

So we have Mariel Spark who at her birth was prophesied to be the most powerful witch in centuries of the famous Spark family but she is in her 20’s and can’t manage a summoning spell to save her life which is where Ozroth the Ruthless comes in. She is trying to summon flour and instead gets a demon. Ozroth deals in souls which means he can’t leave until she gives him her soul which she is very adamant is never going to happen. And the story goes from there.

I don’t want to get into to much detail because I think you should read it with as little information as possible like I did. I didn’t even read the synopsis before picking it up. I loved Mariel as a character. I loved her personality so much. She the type who can be talking about something and then something will pop and her head and then she will start talking about that. I kind of found it to be funny at times. Ozroth is supposed to be this big bad demon but circumstances has changed him a bit. I love how they go from “enemies” to friends and then to lovers. I did see the conflict coming from a mile away but I didn’t care. I will say I couldn’t stand Mariel’s family and I was so happy when Mariel finally started sticking up for herself.

Overall this was a laugh out loud enjoyable read and I can’t wait for the next book to come out later this year in November.
